Haunted by the memory of her rape and sinking into alcoholism, she has her son committed to an institution for the mildly mentally disabled. But Ludovic is far from the simpleton they assume him to be. He constantly dreams of the mother he adores. One Christmas Eve, after setting fire to the asylum, he escapes and finds refuge aboard a stranded wreck. He is almost happy. Yet the need for maternal love is stronger. He writes to his mother, leading to an inevitable and heart-wrenching scene of mutual recognition.
