En 1932, alors qu’il est en pleine crise de la quarantaine accentuée par l’arrivée du cinéma parlant, Chaplin décide de ne pas rentrer à Hollywood après sa tournée européenne pour promouvoir Les Lumières de la ville. Au lieu de cela, il s’échappe à Bali, en compagnie de son demi-frère Sydney.
Bali l’aide à vaincre sa crainte du passage au son, et lui permet de se lancer dans une nouvelle phase de sa carrière de cinéaste, ouvrant ainsi la voie aux Temps modernes, film dans lequel il fait mieux que se mettre à parler : il chante.
In 1932, while in the midst of a midlife crisis exacerbated by the advent of sound cinema, Chaplin decides not to return to Hollywood after his European tour promoting City Lights. Instead, he flees to Bali with his half-brother Sydney. Bali helps him overcome his fear of the transition to sound and allows him to embark on a new phase of his filmmaking career, paving the way for Modern Times, a film in which he does more than speak—he sings.
