Dans la rade de Hong Kong, l'equipage d'un vieux cargo appartenant a une compagnie en faillite attend que la justice maritime statue sur son sort. A bord : Nikos le radio d'origine grec, désespéré et opiomane. Il va rencontrer Li, enfant chinoise logeant sur un sampan qui survit en nettoyant les bateaux le temps de leur escale.

In the harbor of Hong Kong, the crew of an old cargo ship belonging to a bankrupt company waits for the maritime authorities to decide its fate. On board is Nikos, the Greek radio operator, desperate and addicted to opium. He meets Li, a Chinese child living on a sampan, who survives by cleaning boats during their stopovers.
